Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice Movie Masters Figures Announced for SDCC 2015

Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are going to loom large at Comic-Con this year — and in toy boxes.
The superheroes of the upcoming movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (in theaters March 25, 2016) are bound to be a central component of the Warner Bros. movie panel at the San Diego Convention Center's cavernous Hall H on July 11. Their action figures will also be on display and available for fans to take home as Comic-Con exclusives during the convention that begins next Wednesday.

Mattel is selling a movie-inspired BvS two-pack ($30) with the likeness of Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman. Each of the 6-inch-tall figures comes with fabric capes, display bases that combine to form the film's iconic logo, and lights-and-sounds packaging teasing one of the big moments from the upcoming movie.

Fans of the Batfleck's new Batmobile can also pick up a Hot Wheels edition ($25) of the superhero ride, featuring a die-cast chassis and body, rubber tires and neato machine guns and missile launchers — all encased in limited-edition packaging.

Mattel has a new Barbie line coming in the spring, and at their booth the company is showcasing a doll based on actress Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman from Dawn of Justice. Standing 12 inches tall and featuring a sword, shield, tiara, bulletproof bracelets and her signature lasso of truth, Wonder Woman is part of the Barbie movie collection along with Superman and Batman.

And the Mattel booth is slated to display a life-sized Hot Wheels build of a Batman v Superman Twin Mill car designed to celebrate the film. Graphics on the car are inspired from the film suits of both heroes, and a die-cast toy version of the vehicle will be on sale in the spring as part of a movie-inspired Hot Wheels line.

Mezco 1:12 Collective Dark Knight Returns Batman 6" figure

Mezco Reveals The One:12 Collective New York- (July 22nd, 2014)- Mezco Toyz today announced The One:12 Collective, a new line of high end 6″ scale collectable figures. Redesigning the 6″ scale figure category by combining posable action figures with real cloth outfitting, in a similar fashion to the 1/6th scale and larger collectables. Mezco’s One:12 Collective line will present a multitude of different characters from numerous brands. Combining superior sculpting with an abundance of articulation, the One:12 Collective figures feature over 32 points of articulation, capable of over 40,000 possible poses: combining form and function to create a remarkably realistic aesthetic. Digitally sculpted by the industry’s finest artists and painstakingly engineered by Mezco’s production team is a state of the art collectable that holds up to real play. The costuming is meticulously tailored and uses specially selected materials to create the highest standard of outfitting and drapery at the 6″ scale. Fabrication, color, drapery, comparative scale and mobility are all closely considered to bring the finest attire achievable. Every One:12 Collective figure will include a display base as well as a multitude of accessories. These accessories are designed to have a “real world” look to further make the figure seem like it has truly come to life. These accessories, also precisely crafted, range from changeable parts to character specific weapons, equipment and props. Currently planned for the One:12 Collective are characters from The DC Universe, Judge Dredd, Classic Universal Monsters, and some other surprises to be announced in the future. Mezco President, Mez Markowitz declared “We are all very excited with the One:12 Collective line. I think we are offering a fantastic product that both satisfies the customers desire for articulation as well as the ability to hide it all in a extremely realistic way. Another great aspect to the line is that we are striving to present high quality product that is in line with 1/6th scale (12″ figure) collectables while taking up far less display space and at a much more reasonable price point. Our Dark Knight Returns Batman figure is really a fantastic piece and we cannot wait to show what is up next. Mezco plans on releasing several items a year from this line and it is a long term initiative for our team, really a dream come true for all of us here.” The One:12 Collective “The Dark Knight Returns” Batman figure is set to be publicly revealed at San Diego Comic Con at Mezco booth # 3445 and shipping to customers in Fall 2014.

Mezco has announced that they have bought into a DC License to bring new 6" figures into the arena. They will be known as the One:12 Collective. and will combine over 32 points of articulation with real cloth outfits and meant to echo the style and details of 1/6 scale figures, but at a more reasonable size. The figures will include display bases and accessories.

Clearly picking up where Mattel has let us down so many times, we will no doubt be seeing some VERY impressive licenses join the ranks in this format. Looks like its time to clear off another shelf in the old Manchild Museum at GeekSummit Headquarters.

I very much look forward to Mezco helming the gap left by Mattel's bowing out of the 6" game while NECA does knockout work with their 18" licenses.

Henry Cavill as Superman First Look:

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Who's better, Superman or Batman? Zack Snyder doesn't have to choose a favorite since he's getting to put both on the big screen at the same time. The director of last year's Man of Steel doubles down on A-list superheroes in his follow-up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (in theaters May 6, 2016), teaming a returning Henry Cavill as the big guy in the cape and "S" on his chest with Ben Affleck as the latest cinematic incarnation of the Dark Knight. By bringing in more DC Comics do-gooders such as Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), the new movie is thicker, denser and more epic than Man of Steel, according to Snyder. And it's also the next step toward building a strong movie universe that ultimately leads to Snyder's Justice League, the supergroup answer to Marvel's The Avengers, tentatively scheduled for a 2018 release. Now filming in Detroit, Dawn of Justice is pretty much a thrill every day for the admitted comic fan. "It's not an un-fun job, I will say that," Snyder says. Man of Steel was all about Superman finding his place in the world as both a hero and as a man, ultimately saving the city of Metropolis from certain doom. Dawn of Justice continues to immerse him on Earth by working at the Daily Planet as Clark Kent along with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne). But it also takes him to new environments such as Gotham City and introduces larger threats, including Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Really digging in and evolving the character — both as Clark and as Superman — is a challenge, Snyder says, but there's also "the fun of trying to figure out what to put in front of him that's difficult." Cavill is definitely more comfortable in the role the second time around, says the director. "We've both created this guy and we can push him around a little bit," he says. "The more time I spend with Henry, the more he's Superman to me." The debuting heroes Superman meets will affect his perspective on Earth and on the ones he loves, and Snyder feels his convictions will be drawn into question as well. When developing Man of Steel, Snyder didn't harbor dreams of one day putting Batman on screen, too — he figured he'd one day tackle an adaptation of Frank Miller's seminal 1980s masterpiece The Dark Knight Returns, which pits a retired Batman against government agent Superman. It ultimately made sense with Dawn of Justice to add Bruce Wayne and his cowled alter ego to the mix. Because of Christopher Nolan's recent Dark Knight trilogy, "I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie," Snyder says, "but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in." Instead of using several movies to define Affleck's Batman, Snyder felt the character's 75-year mythology is so deep in culture now that they can just jump to an older, road-weary take on the Dark Knight. Plus, he says, "it's cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys." The director can't say exactly how the relationship between the two superheroes evolves, "but suffice it to say there is a 'v' in between their names" in the movie title, Snyder says. He explains that having the "v" instead of "vs." is a way "to keep it from being a straight 'versus' movie, even in the most subtle way." Snyder's only done a few scenes so far with Cavill and Affleck together, but the historical significance isn't lost on him, he says. "It's never really been done and it's kinda cool." Similarly, Snyder also knows that putting the iconic superheroine Wonder Woman on a movie screen is a big deal, too. He says he hasn't filmed any scenes with Gadot as the Amazonian princess yet, but "she's working out and getting buff and ripped." While Snyder is surprised in a way that fans are already so pumped for Dawn of Justice, he also understands the anticipation. "You can talk all you want about other superhero movies, but it's Batman and Superman, let's just be honest," Snyder says. "I don't know how you get bigger than that." DC Collectibles: Batman the Animated Series figures, SDCC More on the way?

DC Collectibles has announced the expansion of their 6" Animated Batman figures. This looks to be a nice set of figures, especially with DCU dropping out of retail, this is a nice continuation to what could have easily been done by Mattel.

DC Collectibles has announced the expansion of their 6" Animated Batman figures. This looks to be a nice set of figures, especially with DCU dropping out of retail, this is a nice continuation to what could have easily been done by Mattel. Just today we were introduced to the Joker, Robin, & Poison Ivy. Two Face and Mr Freeze's debut was a few months ago if only in sketches. This brings the total to 7 figures in an already unreleased line-up. Simply amazing. We're sure to see more at SDCC this summer as well. Who's next? Superman the Animated Series anyone? Seeing how these are being handled definitely makes the mind wander. Seeing such a push into a territory with the idea that there will be more lends to the thought that this could be a new era approaching for DCC. Mattel finally bowed out of the 6" game for DC characters leaving Marvel Legends to run the toy isles. Meanwhile DCC is putting out some of the best looking figures right now that we may have never come to expect from DCC, Formerly DC Direct. It even looks like we are hijacking Mattel's T Crotch/Hip assemblies anyway. Points of articulation have been a point of articulation for years in action figure collecting. Do we need it? Does it diminish the look of the figure? What's more valuable, posability or awesome sculpts? Has anyone seen Figma? These people have been doing AWESOME beautiful Japanese characters, and when they get to do familiar pop culture characters, they blow it away!!! Anyway, I think its been pretty clear that DCC is looking to pick up the slack left behind by Mattel. Could we be stepping into the world where the figures we wanted to see from Mattel will come from DCC in our current scale? Superman Movie Masters anyone? Imagine the result of DCC getting behind supplementing our appetites for Mattel product? We finally get a Christopher Reeve retail figure and he's 4" tall? or less? No thanks, why is it that Mattel has decided to get out of the 6" game? or have they? Will Movie Masters ALWAYS be on the horizon while the 3.75" figures are our ballet boxes for what properties get the 6" treatment? Has Mattel caught on to Hasbro's directional success? There are a few stinkers in Hasbro's pegs but for the most part they are sought after characters to varying degrees. Star Wars alone in its 3.75" line can detect the demand for more characters in its own line, they've been doing it for years though. Regardless, if we're not going to get them from Mattel, why not accept one from a company that can do every bit the justice to a property like this?

I've been kicking around this Kit Bash Christopher Reeve Superman Movie Masters for years just hoping that I would see it bested by Mattel. But they led us astray… 2" off course. Will Mattel catch on to Hasbro's strategic success? Will they be there for us when the next superhero movies come out? How can they ignore a 6" hero figure market or force us to re-buy in an inferior scale and quality? I guess they'll find out. Or maybe they've still got something big up their sleeves?

or maybe not...

There are a few stinkers in Hasbro's isles too but for the most part they are sought after characters to varying degrees. Star Wars alone in its 3.75" line can detect the demand for more characters in its own line, they've been doing it for years. Regardless, if we're not going to get them from Mattel, why   not accept one from a company that can do every bit the diligent justice to a property like this?

I'd love to see DCC take over Mattel's former command of awesome DC Characters in 6" but actually do them AWESOME!!! I loved the 4 Horsemen line, there are still few true gaps that will never be filled from my DCU collection… I'm looking at you Gold Superman and Mxyzptlk… WTF? And the C&C couldn't have been a proper version of SP Kalibak? Can we atleast Mail Away for our Blue Suited Clark Kent figure? Please update the DCSH Sculpt though… he looks pretty weak, eeven for Clark...

But I don't think it was the Horsemen who killed the line… the line killed the line… the bottom line… jerks…

Thanks for reading, come for the news, stay for the rants...

Batman the Animated Series figures by DC Collectibles Toy Fair 2014 preview

DC Collectibles has struck personal paydirt... Goodbye DCU... hello DCC!!! With Mattel announcing its stepping back into the shadows along the line of making demanded Adult Collectibles in the 6" line DC Collectibles has taken what has seemed to be their rightful place making kickass plastic for our enjoyment.

Here we see the first preview of their Batman and Catwoman form the Bruce Timm styled Batman the Animated Series... This is the first thing I've been excited about all year for sure.

Batman the Animated Series figures by DC Collectibles Toy Fair 2014 preview

DC Collectibles is definitely taking notes on articulation here lately as we have seen much of DCU's joint shapes making it into more recent releases. But this line definitely starts to look like the kind of things we always wanted to see from Mattel but with the follow through of DC Collectibles.

I am impressed...

UPDATE 4/7/14

*In recent news, that same urge to reveal info is still going strong. This time with our first look at the 3D renders and articulation breakdowns for the aforementioned Two-Face & Mr. Freeze:

Batman Unlimited | Wave 3 Beware the Batman 6" figure Revealed

Mattel has released the first image of the Beware the Batman figure from Dc Comics Unlimited Wave3.

Batman Unlimited | Wave 3 Beware the Batman 6" figure Revealed

While I find the figure itself to be a pretty accurate depiction of the character's appearance thus far I do hate to see more and more figures losing their ab crunch articulation. Hopefully the scale/proportions of this figure in particular make it a solid choice and not a new trend to seep into all of the titles we can look forward to in the future.

Man of Steel | NECA Superman Quarter Scale REVEALED!!!

Shots released yesterday showing us our first glimpse of the NECA quarter scale Man of Steel Superman figure coming this summer. While I AM excited to see this coming over the horizon I am also hoping that this is the beginning of a major MAJOR partnership between DC and NECA. Their sculpting is second to none. Their attention to detail and really just their responsiveness to what fans want to see is uncanny.  While this first shot does leave us witness to the prototype process as far as likeness and color the facial likeness sees more detail in the unpainted version below.

The properties that they find license with are awesome... NECA is where I'd like to give all my money as a Mid-High end collectible company. Mattel has been at it for years with their DC license slowly ascending to giving us awesome movie property toys but NECA was already at the top of that mountain years ago. This unpainted version definitely gives me confidence that NECA has got this figured out.

I can only hope that we will see NECA use this as their foot in the door to do 6-7" DC figures, or at the least be sought out by DC Collectibles to do their figure sculpting. I love Tim Brukner's work but for all he does DCC really shits in the fan on articulation.

Dark Knight Movie Masters | Custom Fabic Cape Tutorial

GeekSummit Presents:
Building a Better Batman
Fabric Cape Tutorial | Dark Knight Movie Masters

I have been asked several times over the years to provide a tutorial on how I do my "Pull Through" fabric capes for DCU and Dark Knight figures… I don't think the description of the process has ever really made it absolutely clear so I think this in depth visual guide should do nicely. I may be blowing my cover a little bit in doing this but last night I sat down to make one and I had my phone handy so I figured "What the hell... Let's do this."

For an added feature with a wired fabric cape, click the video above!!

Fabric:
First I start with prepping my fabric. You can use about any kind of fabric to do these but I find the thinner weightier polyesters work best. The thicker the fabric the more likely it will have a bulky appearance. This is a nice stretchy material and when handled with care it can look quite nice.
For symmetry I take the selected cloth and fold it in half for sizing and cutting.

For dramatic presence I make the cape 1.5 body lengths wide and just over an inch taller than the figure. It will draw up a little after final placement so you'll want that extra length. I use a Fiskars rotary cutter to make swooping circular cuts for the scallops then I terminate the top in an arch just so there are no straight lines. within 30 seconds you have your cape produced.

Figure Prep:
To make way for the fabric cape to attach I take a dremmel with the small threaded cylinder to grind out my entry points into the points where the original cape ends. Right there at the clavicle/collar bone. I aim my bit at the center of the shoulder blades right in the mid back. This dodges any articulation points on the inside. You can broaden this hole in the back for more working space if you like. Once you've completed this step you should be able to see clean through from the collar bone to the back.

I also notch out the back of the neck for better posability of the head (i.e. Batpod Posing/Gliding/General Action Posing) This time I also did the front of the neck after I had taken these pictures. this is done using the same dremmel bit.

Cape Prep:
You will be pulling a lot of fabric through some tiny holes so it is important to reinforce the fabric with some sort of "gasket" if you will to prevent the fabric from ripping. I use a hi bond double sided tape. You could probably find something like it at a fabric store as a hemming tape. You don't need much as you see which is nice.

I make 2 squares and place them symmetrically at a width of the shoulders. That gives you slack to go around the neck (removing the head really makes this easier). I fold the fabric over onto the tape and voila!! your cape has every hem it will ever need. This is a reinforcement as you will use a thin wire to guide the fabric into the body. I use a dental pick to punch a hole through the fabric and tape and loop my wire through the tiny hole.

I take 2 lengths of wire (one for each entry point) and needle it through the hole and then bend it perfectly in half. I then twist the wire as tightly as possible to make for a clean feed through the hole.Once both wires have been fed through I then twist THOSE together making ONE braid of wires.

I then clip the collected wires and take my needle nose pliers and begin to crimp them into as small a bunch as possible. Being careful not to push any fabric back through the figure's front I bundle the wore and fabric into the exit point in the back. I use a hot glue gun to finalize the bundle by filling only the exposed area with hot glue. this will keep everything in place.

You do have the option in this step to use the still hot glue to "pin" the cape to the figure's back. This can help keep the cape from lurching up on the figure and looking weightless. It can also help you define the direction and tightness of the cape over the shoulders. A little Matte Finish in a can and this Dark Knight is a lot less conspicuous and a lot more awesome!!! (Matte Finish used in Picture #1)

So there we have it. A nice FULL low profile cape for our Movie Masters Dark Knight Batman. This trick can be used on any character needing a replacement for those awkward vinyl capes. I think it adds a lot of posability and balance to these figures that just deserve SO much better when it comes to their presentation.  Be sure and check back in the future as I plan to take these capes a few steps further in the future... I'm thinking "Memory Cloth"...
