Superman Celebration 2014

Ah Summertime...
3 months of Sunburns, Speeding Tickets, and Family

Per usual it was time for my annual trek 179 miles north to Metropolis, Il. Ever since Father's Day of 2009 it has been a tradition for my daughter and I to head North to the little river town known as "The Home of Superman" in Southern Illinois. Every year we prepare our Griswaldian family t-shirts and wait patiently for the second full weekend of June to come around. In the present economic climate, full weeks of vacation can be harder to come by and the short roadtrip always offers a solid weekend of quality Daddy/Daughter time. This was a special year for sure. My son was just born on May 1st, and of course was too little to attend with any benefit to himself this year, but we stayed strong to keep the trip alive for traditions sake. Someday, LittleBigMan... someday...

We headed up HWY 51 to Paducah, Ky where we stay every year at Drury Inns & Suites, as we always do. The staff has remained consistent for years as well as courteous and helpful and damned good at their job... Being called by your name as you pass through for breakfast adds a touch of royalty on our modest roadtrip. Its right on the edge of Paducah and only leaves a 10 minute drive in for every visit. It keeps us in the middle of some retail/entertainment action for downtime between visits into Metropoils since there is no real dense commercial center to town besides the town center itself, but that does not slow us down from dropping some major cash love on the little town of Metropolis. Truth be told, My daughter loves staying at the Drury for their indoor pool and breakfast every morning... gotta love a kid who loves tradition and her Daddy. *

*If you look closely, there are tiny tear stains in my waffle

This was the 36th Annual Superman Celebration, and as off years go, it was a lower turnout than last year which saw the Man of Steel's 75th Anniversary as well as the release of Man of Steel in theaters the next weekend, but always a great time. Vendor areas seemed to be thriving, the food was great, and everybody who made it seemed to be having a good time. The event is largely supported by the locals and people from the surrounding areas

A special treat was seeing the Americana Hollywood Museum was back in operation from an extended closure due to flood damage in 2012. I was told that it is not open EVERY weekend, but is now back in some capacity, especially during the Celebration weekend and throughout the summer. (forgive me, pretty lady if I misunderstood any part of that).

The first thing you will notice as you arrive on the grounds is the cinephile's playground that is the courtyard full of planes, trains... and a Bat-Boat. I make a special point of taking my daughter's picture with the Superman standup near the entrance as a growth chart of sorts. As she became tall enough to put her head in the cut out, she has since started to stoop into position, so this will now stand as a growth chart of her head only...

I love going into this place. It's a special mix of exactly what you'd expect. Jim Brickman, owner of the SuperMuseum in the town square, also operates the Americana Hollywood and it is stuffed with unique finds he has collected and amassed over the years representing decades and decades of Elvis, Marilyn, and James Dean, the Rat Pack, years of Sci-Fi, Horror, Tomb Raider for diverse measure and of course the AWESOME backroom which is essentially an extension of the SuperMuseum as it is nearly completely DC Character related collectibles representing nearly every generation of licensed action figures and toys from the 70's to current releases. Not without its more peculiar displays, there were the only 2 (3) items I chose to document as I soaked in the rest... I suppose there's not much sexier than a pair of abnormally large brains... Such impressive organs...

There was also quite the surprise in the gift shop at the Americana Hollywood. It was unavoidable that the gift shop had been shifted from its previously Superman heavy presence to a very VERY Star Wars heavy offering. I was overcome by the contrast between my cash on hand and the bevy of stuff I was looking at. From larger ships to modern 3.75" figures @ $4 a pop bagged with accessories for the most part, I had to cut out a special part of our last few hours in town to dig through the multi tiered trough of loose figures to be thorough... I left plenty behind and I encourage any enthusiasts to drop by the museum some convenient weekend. You can always contact the SuperMuseum to see when they'd be open for you to dig through. It's a troop builder's dream; as a compulsive troop builder I can attest.

Child not for sale and present for scale reference only.

Another nice surprise was the addition of Daily Star Comics to the circuit of things to see in Metropolis. I had tried to locate this place in 2013 but it proved difficult since it was a relatively new listing so we didn't check it out. It's a little tucked away off the main drag but still just a couple hearts beats away from all the action. I will say it was mostly empty excluding what seemed like a few rented vendor spots within their extended retail space but still a cool place to run into. Of course while it takes its name from Clark Kent's original employer from his comic debut, the store is actually a Doctor Who-centric retail spot, complete with a Tennant/Smith era TARDIS in the parking lot which obviously makes for a good photo op.

No trip is complete without a visit to the SuperMuseum itself. Right in the heart of the action Right next to the 15 ft statue is Jim Hambrick's archival opus, the SuperMuseum, home to what has to be damn near every licensed & unlicensed Superman product known to man. The place is wall to wall Superman from action figures, movie props, costumes, production prototypes, handmade statues and action figures... (ahem)...

The Museum doesn't change much over the years but it is such a rich collection of Superman memorabilia and artifacts that it is always a treat to drop in and pay $5 to wander the short but dense  maze to examine all the pieces contained within. Jim Hambrick has been a lifelong collector and even manager and friend to Kirk Alyn (the silver screen's original Superman) and has been a central figure himself in Metropolis bringing crowds to this town with a recorded population of 6500, which leaps in a single bound to nearly quadruple it size for the celebration weekends on a good year.

As always it was a good year. We came we saw, we goofed off, we spent our money, and we left broke, and we can't wait to come back. Next year we'll be +1.

The trip itself was over, and we didn't stick around for the Costume Contest or the closing festivities, but trips like these don't just stop when you leave Metropolis for the long road home, there's always something waiting around the corner. Literally around the corner from the Market Street square we came across the closed Massac Theater, Metropolis' only theater to speak of outside of the Baymont Auditorium. The theater had been owned by Larry Ward in the recent past (could possibly still be) who was manager to Noel Neil, TV's Lois Lane from the George Reeves era Adventures of Superman. Efforts have been underway to rehab the facility for public use once again, but it had seemed that things had come to halt since last year when we saw a new roof had been put in place. We took a look through the windows into the generously sized theater space. It will definitley take a lot of work to bring the building back to its full glory, but I'm sure that one day it will become a welcome addition to the festivites as a potential space for screenings of the Fan Film Festivals and general purpose stage use. Every year there is a series of breakfasts in the early morning hours to support the "Save the Maassac" campaign, but as I saw on the fundraising marker out front, it looks like maybe support has waned in recent years. Hopefully they have seen an uptick that wasn't represented here.

I've been inspired in the past to extend my modest services to an effort to bring more attention to the effort, but I find it easy to get in over my head on passion projects. But this space definitely seems to have some life left in it, barring some much needed work as far as the insides which had fallen to ruin in the past years of having a collapsed roof which wreaked havoc on the interior. I would still care to rebuild it in a digital setting that could show the potential for the space as it pertains to the celebration specifically, but I know if this space were to be back up and running according to the necessary updated standards it could be a great facility for general purposes in the town. There may be more on this before the summer is out... but don't quote me on that, artists are funny people, easily distracted...

Oh... and I found Jesus, unfortunately it was at 10:31 and he was no longer serving breakfast, so I bought a Coke and a bag of Cheetos anyway, since it would have been weird to just turn around and leave. It's ok... maybe next time Sir.

I also found Elvis, but this was much closer to Memphis. We had stopped at a Love's Truck Stop Hardee's outside of Jackson, Tn on our way back down and all of the sudden a presence made itself known. Out of the corner of my eye was the mis-shapen hairdo of the savior of popular music himself. I turned and there he was, checking the air pressure on his moderately priced compact SUV. I warned my daughter that it was not polite to stare as I fumbled with my iPhone for no less than a full minute one handed trying to get it to focus... Much like Sasquatch, Elvis too had bested me as he managed to elude my skills of depth of field and composition.

That's the trip folks, thanks for reading, I had a great time.

Man of Steel | SDCC Exclusive Revealed

2013 SDCC Man of Steel Exclusive - MattyCollector.com

Mattel has released images of the 2013 SDCC Exclusive Man of Steel 2 Pack
Every year, Mattel has one of the largest toy presences at Comic-Con, and they’re again bringing a host of cool exclusives, including a special ‘Man of Steel’ box set ($50.00).

2013 SDCC Man of Steel Exclusive - MattyCollector.com

They’re battling it out on the big screen, but Superman and General Zod bring their fight home in the two-pack. (And Zod comes packing with a steel girder! Look out, Supes!)

Superman looks intense usually but when he really needs to take charge he breaks out the heat vision. Push a button on the back of his figure and his eyes light up to add drama to a fiery situation.
San Diego Comic Con takes place 07/17/13 – 07/21/13

Via USA Today

GeekSummit Summary:
While I nearly figured that all of these features would be included I'm surprised that Zod is not the character getting the heat vision feature and Superman a more deluxe looking fabric cape. While I am always a fan of fabric over vinyl the cape does betray scale a bit and I HATE those rubber tops. The transitions are always made to be blocky and there's no good way to do it via Mattel.

Also is this possibly the only way we get bearded Zod in the Kryptonian skin suit? Would we have rather gotten Superman/Zod with ab crunch and fabric cape options?

Man of Steel | Movie Masters hit Ebay!!!

It's happened... Man of Steel Movie Masters have found their first debut on ebay this week. At first I thought it was yet another April Fools prank but eBay is hardly the place to pull something like that for several reasons. At first I was hesitant to hit Buy It Now (mostly because of their feedback panel) but I made sure to contact the seller to make sure this was no pre-sale or pre-order or some other junk like that and I got a speedy response back that these were in stock and ready to go.

Now this won't take the fun out of the official retail release that we'll see in May/June at all but I did want to get one of these as soon as humanly possible. MSRP @ $14.99 I paid $26.99 for mine... then ordered a second one (Superman only) the seller had full sets of the first 3 figures as well for $69.99 but I think that came to be once they realized these were selling VERY quickly... The price is now $27.99 each so expect to see that go up as quantities dwindle as well.

But here we are with full presentations of the front and backs of the first 3 figures to be released.

Jor El • Superman • General Zod

Here we have a good look at the bios (though blurry on some) to give really no deeper insight into the characters or plots. General Zod's is the only one that reveals any new news that there are more Kryptonians than just himself and Faora along with Kal-El.

While I'm excited about the release of these I'm still not crazy about their color scheme being so Red-Heavy. But I know they need to step away from the deeper scheme of Dark  Knight Rises to set themselves apart at retail. Though I'm still a fan of my Custom Packaging Prototype.

Man of Steel | Movie Masters from Mattel

Its finally happened. we've gotten our first looks at the Man of Steel Movie Masters from Mattel. Its been a personally long awaited sight to see how Mattel was going to handle this line. Initially I am pleased. Though I do hope our Superman features some sort of ab crunch mechanism. Until we know for sure... enjoy these images!!!

Visitors to NYCC 2013 can be sure to check these guys out in person as part of the festivities surrounding the release of the movie as well as their anticipated mountains and mountains of merch.

Henry Cavill as Superman Man of Steel Movie Masters by Mattel Russell Crowe will be sporting some heavy-duty armor in Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated “Man of Steel” — that is, if a new Jor-El action figure is any indication. The Mattel figure features Superman’s Kryptonian father, but he’s not wearing the ethereal white robes of Marlon Brando’s 1978 portrayal. The toy adopts Crowe’s likeness and appears to be clad in the same alien-meets-steam-punk style shoulder armor we’ve seen in photos from the set. The figure also wears metal boots, leg armor and gauntlets over a blue undersuit.
Like last summer's Batman film The Dark Knight Rises featured everyone from the Dark Knight to Catwoman to the villainous Bane, Mattel is releasing a Movie Masters line ($14.99, arriving in June) featuring Zod, Supes, JorEl and detailed versions of the movie's main characters that look just like Shannon, Cavill and the rest. Plus, Mattel's also putting out Man of Steel QuickShots, a new wave of figures harnessing two of Superman's best traits: flight and strength.

Superman doesn't drive an iconic car or sport a belt laden with gadgets, so when it comes to designing merchandise, toymakers haven't had much to play with.
That hasn't dissuaded companies from partnering with Warner Bros. for "Man of Steel," however.
In fact, as it readies to relaunch Superman in theaters this summer, the studio has secured a longer list of licensees around the tentpole than it had for 2006's "Superman Returns." And early demand from retailers for products tied to the June 14 release is on par with that for "The Dark Knight Rises," surprising even executives at the studio, sources close to the deals say.
That demand is a positive sign for WB and DC Entertainment, which have put considerable coin behind "Man of Steel" and hope the pic can launch a new Superman franchise and generate interest in "Justice League," which would feature the character alongside Batman, Wonder Woman and the Flash. "Justice League" is being developed for 2015.
Superman has long been a popular character for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. But because his powers -- the ability to fly, his heat vision and super strength -- are hard to translate in action figure form, sales were mostly driven by apparel featuring the character's signature "S" shield.
"Man of Steel" won't dramatically change that, but through its long-standing relationship with Mattel, Warner Bros. believes it's been able to expand on the kinds of products it can offer this time around. For example, Mattel will introduce "Man of Steel QuickShots," which will build elements of flight and strength into its toy line that will include action and collectible figures, vehicles and playsets.
Mattel's planned lineup of products, which WB will promote at the various toy fair conventions kicking off today in Nuremberg, Germany, and bring to the New York Toy Fair next month, is said to have sparked interest from buyers for stores akin to that of Batman fare, execs at retailers confirm to Variety. But so has the more action-oriented approach helmer Zack Snyder and producer Chris Nolan have taken in the rebooting the film franchise for DC and WB.
"Superman will always be a pop culture icon, and the upcoming summer action adventure will continue to fuel excitement for this fan-favorite superhero across the globe," said Brad Globe, president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products.
Mattel's toys are one of more than 300 product licenses WBCP has brokered for "Man of Steel," covering toys, apparel, accessories and back-to-school categories.
Other partners include Lego, whose construction sets are inspired by scenes from the film; Rubie's Costume Co.; Thinkway Toys; RC vehicles; collectible figures from Sideshow Collectibles, Kotobukiya, SquareEnix, Neca and Jakks Pacific; props from Noble Collection; and puzzles from Cardinal Industries, along with Funko, which will produce vinyl figures through its Pop! line.
At the toy fairs, WBCP will also promote products for other DC properties such as the classic Batman TV series from the 1960s; the "Batman: Arkham Asylum," "Arkham City" and "Injustice: Gods Among Us" videogames; "The Hobbit" trilogy; and TV shows "The Big Bang Theory," "The Vampire Diaries," "Scooby-Doo" and "Looney Tunes."

Superman Celebration 2012

Superman Celebration 2012
Annual Father Daughter RoadTrip #2

 best father's day card ever

So I first came to the celebration when in 2009 I get a Father's Day card just a little early. I open it up and the Superman Theme BLARES out of the envelope and there is a picture of my daughter in a supergirl costume streetside holding up one thumb and with her other hand holding a sign that says "Metropolis or Bust". This was definitely the coolest card I had ever got. It was my invitation to "treat" my family to the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, Illinois which as it turned out was only as far as Nashville from Memphis so all in all... just a nice day trip. I even went Full Griswald on my girls and made these t-shirts so we could be readily identifyable as family if we got separated per chance from our daughter.

We left on a Friday morning and headed up hwy 51 to the northern corner of Tennessee where we hopped right over the heel of Kentucky and into the madness that was the 31st Annual Superman Celebration. Superhero's and tourists lined the streets along with food vendors and souviner stands offering everyting from T-shirts to Blow Up characters to the general managerie of flea market goods.

Before we even got into the town square of Metropolis we saw the Metropolis Drug Store with a copyright friendly backlit superman flying across the front. We had to drop in and see what they had to offer. I think I dropped $30 easily on little nicknacks to bring home to folks, goofy adjustable rings, a key chain, some stickers, I can't remember what else.
Once we got into town we stopped first at the Americana Hollywood Museum which awas quite a sight. I wanted to build up slow to give myself some suspense I guess. The back yard was a photo-op playground with Superman Stand-ups, a Phone Booth, Blues Brothers getting down in a gazebo, Trains, Planes, an automobile...? On the inside a whole building with rooms dedicated to different themes and actors like Marylin Monroe, Elvis, Pamela Anderson... (why not?), Gone with the Wind, Riverboat Era/Casino artifacts and advertisement pieces, you name it and FINALLY in the back an entire room with damn near every collectable Superman figure ever made just lining the walls with different custom displays throughout. It was definitely a sight to see for any figure collector.

Next was the SuperMuseum on the town square. THIS was the sight I was waiting to see. Talk about wall to wall... I cant even tell you what color the walls are. Every square inch of this place was dedicated to Superman through the years with screen used props and costumes from the movies and TV, Storyboards, production models from the films, every peice of merchandise imaginable and so much more. It was a SuperMecca, a SuperDecaMecca even... Unbelievable.

In 2010 we skipped due to summer crunch financial reasons and we (my daughter and I) were bummed out but then throughout 2011 my daughter was begging to come back. I put up no fight because I had such an awesome time seeing the SuperMuseum as well as the Americana Hollywood Museum and just being in the atmosphere of all this fanfare for my only favorite SuperHero since before I can remember.

So in 2011 we did leave Wifey behind as she felt she put a cloud over our endless fascination with the goings on in this little town square teeming with Superheroes... and Heroines (yikes) and general displays of Geekhood. So it quickly turned into a father daughter weekend that we look forward to an an annual basis, and that was fine with me since with little girls you never know when they'll become too cool to hang out with Daddy.

I carried on the tradition of making our own shirts since I liked the simple '09 deisgn so much but I wanted to crank it up a little bit. So I made this design and decided to promote it as a free download since I wasnt really looking to make any money it was just part of the tradition, but I did want to share.

I also added to this trip something that I would have loved to do so much in '09 but there simply wasn't any time to conjur up any efforts worth seeing. Of course making custom figures is one of my hobbies and as a graphic designer I had ventured into doing custom packaging as well. But time just simply didn't allow for it, so with skipping 2010 and 2011 coming I knew I would have time to really polish something up. We got into town and did the Americana and made our way to the town square where I just stepped up to the counter with my brown bag and asked the girl behind the counter what the process would be on making a donation of a piece. I didn't know if they would take it or not really but I wanted to try.  So I pulled this out of the bag and layed it on the counter in front of the girl running the register.

"Did you make this?" she asks.
"Yeah, I was wondering if I could donate this to the museum?"
"Sure" she says.
I was like "Well cool... do I need to leave any information? some of it's printed on the packaging but... eh?"
"That's cool, I'll put it right here."

She just kinda placed it on the shelf behind the counter and I assume it sat there for approval by Jim Hambrick, the owner of the SuperMuseum and Americana.

It was a little anticlimactic, but I wasn't really expecting any kind of fanfare over it. Its a small town museum and it was in the middle of their busiest weekend.

The packaging was made specifically for this "event" of me donating it to them. I just thought it'd be a nice touch, but really if nothing else it was just a little more deisgn work I got to do for myself.
(please note this package was not the one delivered, this was my first try at building this particular version and it sucked, the museum got the display worthy build).

The figure itself was #2 in my new variety of Christopher Reeve figures. #1 was kinda hack'n'slash and was a learning experience in overhauling a figure. This one was MUCH nicer.

So the weekend was over, we packed up, cleaned our hotel room, and headed into Metropolis one last time to soak up some of the Costume contest and bum around for a minute. and by 1:00 we figured we'd start packing it in and get back to Memphis. Another SuperWeekend gone by.

THIS year in 2012, I got the bug a little earlier. With the new Superman movie coming out in 2013, I really wanted to get something special going. I started making up Man of Steel T-shirts in different levels of distress and finally an idea hit me that I thought folks would enjoy.

Once again I offered these up as free downloads along with ANY other designs I could think of and Eh... it was fun, it was free, it was mine... That's all that mattered, but I think I had more fun just keeping the tradition alive for me and my daugher (who did NOT get one of these) to have our own road trip t-shirts. Its a Griswald thing, we don't mind dorking out as long as we do it in pairs.

I also got the idea to kinda crash the party this year using the advanced technology of the iPhone barcode scanning technology. It was to be...

GeekSummit's

FIRST ANNUAL VERY unOfficial

Easter Egg Hunt

It was a good try but I'm seeing I may have overestimated the widespread use of the iphone or the knowlwedge fo these nifty barcodes... As of yet... I still have not had any winners contact me...

BUT, it was a good time... I learned a lot.

The statue is 3 Me's tall and 3 Me's wide.

 Most everybody is from Illinois.

My daughter is adorable...

And getting taller...

Superman is Fuzzy.

This guy's got a great gig...

The first Superman figure was made of wood... Like George Washington...

And I've got a piece in a museum... I'm like Indiana F'n Jones...
